How to Reset Tire Pressure Light

TPMS Light on Dash

If you still notice a flashing tire pressure light even after you’ve inflated all of your tires, you might need to reset it. While your tire pressure monitoring system is critical to your vehicle’s safety, seeing an illuminated TPMS light when there’s no issue can be a problem. Roesch Ford has put together a guide on how to reset your tire pressure light without difficulty.

Resetting Your Ford Tire Pressure Light

Once you properly inflate your tires, your flashing tire pressure light should turn off on its own. However, if your TPMS light is still active after you’ve inflated your tires, there are a few actions you can take:

  • Drive at or above 50 mph to reset your sensor for 10 minutes. We recommend doing this on a highway outside of Elmhurst so you won’t run afoul of any speed limits. This should make your sensor reset the next time you start your car.
  • With your Ford vehicle off, turn your key to the ‘on’ position, but don’t start the car. Hold the TPMS reset button until your tire pressure light blinks three times, then release it. Start your vehicle and wait 20 minutes for the sensor to refresh. You can find your tire pressure monitor reset button beneath the steering wheel. If you can’t locate it, review your owner’s manual.
  • Inflate your tires to 3 PSI over the recommended air amount, then deflate them completely. Be sure to include your spare tire as well, as it might also have a sensor. Once they are deflated, inflate them to the recommended tire pressure.
  • With the vehicle off, disconnect your positive battery cable with a wrench. Turn the vehicle off and honk your horn for about three seconds. This will discharge any power still stored in your vehicle. Then, reconnect the battery.

What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

Many tire pressure sensors often use a battery and a flashing tire pressure light is a sign that the battery needs to be replaced. It can also indicate a problem with one of your sensors. If your TPMS light is on, it’s best to schedule service at the Roesch Ford service center in Bensenville. We will be able to diagnose the problem and get you back on the road safely.
